How can I get a sofa, fridge or bulky item collected?

Start with the exact item and where it is. A sofa upstairs is a different collection from a disconnected appliance on an accessible driveway. Empire offers single-item collection enquiries; Cornwall Council has a separate paid bulky-household-waste service.

Describe one item properly

Include the item type, approximate dimensions and a clear photograph. Tell us whether it is damaged, partly dismantled or still connected. Identify fridges and other electrical goods separately so handling can be confirmed before booking.

Show the route out

Mention the floor level, stairs or lift, tight turns and the nearest suitable parking. If a sofa was assembled in the room, explain that rather than assuming it fits through the door. Do not disconnect gas or electrical equipment yourself unless you are appropriately qualified; arrange the right tradesperson where needed.

Consider the council option too

Cornwall Council's household bulky service has a list of accepted items, preparation requirements and current charges. Check those before booking. It does not accept bulky commercial waste, including waste from holiday lets. The council service and Empire's private collection have different arrangements, so compare what each one includes.

Ask about more than one item

If you also have bags, a mattress or other furniture, list them in the first enquiry. Do not add items to a confirmed single-item collection without checking. A complete list is the best way to get a useful quote and avoid confusion on the day.

Confirm who is loading and from where

Agree a collection point with the provider. Keep items on your property in the meantime and avoid blocking public access. Empire can assess the actual route described in your enquiry; do not assume all private or council services have identical loading rules.

Quick answers

Can I arrange collection of just a fridge?

Ask Empire for a single-item quote and identify the appliance, location and access. Suitability and arrangements are confirmed before booking.

Can council bulky collections take waste from a holiday let?

Cornwall Council says its household bulky service does not collect commercial waste, including holiday-let waste. Check an appropriate commercial arrangement.
